Health Care

As the nation’s overall population ages along with the Baby Boom generation, an increasing number of individuals will require medical services, hospital, nursing, and at-home care, and will purchase trillions of dollars worth of medications, medical devices, and other health related products. U.S. health care consumption rose from 10.9 percent of national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 1988, to more than 14 percent in 2002. That figure is expected to reach 17 percent of GDP by the year 2011.

For Gwinnett, growth in Health Care will mean not only more jobs, but also better access to health care services. Access is important not only to better serve the existing population, but also to be a stronger amenity to sell to firms and workers seeking to relocate to the County. The county is currently underserved in each of the health care services subsectors: ambulatory health care; hospitals; and nursing and residential care facilities. This provides an excellent opportunity for your company’s future economic growth to serve the needs of Gwinnett’s rapidly growing residents.

Gwinnett is strong in medical equipment and supplies manufacturing, with over 2,000 employees and a location quotient of 2.81 in 2005. At this time, pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing is more of an emerging opportunity for the County, with only 313 employees and a location quotient of 0.45.

Distribution & Trade

For Gwinnett, the Distribution and Trade target focuses on strengthening supply and distribution channels for existing firms in manufacturing, wholesale trade, and relation sectors, and leveraging trade opportunities that can be derived from Gwinnett's international workforce. The future of Distribution and Trade is in supply-chain management, as the industry is now focused on the use of technology to manage and optimize the entire process.

Gwinnett's strengths lie predominantly in durable and non-durable merchant wholesalers, but it has growth opportunities in truck transportation, support activities for transportation, and warehousing and storage operations. Gwinnett's potential in this target will be somewhat dependent on its ability to leverage regional Atlanta assets.

Headquarters, Regional Offices & Professional Services

Gwinnett is home to the Fortune 500 global headquarters of AGCO Corporation, Asbury Automotive, and NCR with over 120 international companies choosing Gwinnett for their US or global headquarter operations.

This target focuses on Gwinnett retaining, capturing, and attracting firms specializing in professional, business, and administrative support services, and leveraging professional service opportunities that can be derived from Gwinnett’s international workforce.

Gwinnett can focus growth in headquarters and regional offices by luring parent or subsidiary offices of firms already located in Gwinnett, or the Atlanta region. Working closely on addressing the needs of existing businesses and ensuring they perceive the County as a business-friendly place is a powerful means of attracting and growing corporate headquarters and regional divisional headquarters.

Gwinnett should also strive to capture local services opportunities "exported" to elsewhere in the Atlanta region.

Advanced Communication

Gwinnett maintains a strong and vibrant technology business presence with companies like NCR, Cisco and twtelecom among many others. Retaining and leveraging existing computer and electronic product manufacturing and electrical equipment and appliance manufacturing employment, R&D, wireless and wire-line communications, and other strengths related to this rapidly-changing industry is our focus with this industry.

Gwinnett has also embarked on a regional and statewide initiative to brand Digital Entertainment in Georgia. Working with the State of Georgia, Digitainment Georgia, and a host of industry professionals and economic developers, the Gwinnett Chamber Technology Council has produced a comprehensive DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT WHITE PAPER - a technical marketing piece to showcase this vibrant industry in the State, the resources and assets available and what makes this region so attractive to doing business.

In focusing more strategically on one of digital entertainment's five pillars, Gwinnett - along with regional & statewide economic developers - created a GAMING ASSETS MAP to showcase all gaming organizations, companies, educational institutions and support facilities currently doing business in the state of Georgia.

Gwinnett’s assets in these related sectors are strong, and worthy of a targeted effort to:

(1) Ensure companies continue to be satisfied with their Gwinnett location

(2) Expand their presence in the County; and

(3) Help grow additional local economic opportunities

Technological innovation characterizes these sub-sectors more so than most others, thus Gwinnett will also have to focus on local and regional R&D assets for growth.
