Vehicle Registration Requirements:

Georgia vehicle license tags must be purchased within 30 days of establishing residency. If a vehicle’s out-of-state registration is not current, the vehicle owner should apply immediately upon moving to Georgia. All vehicles 1986 and newer must be titled, with the exception of trailers weighing less than 2,000 pounds. Georgia residents moving into Gwinnett County from another county must complete the address change within 30 days. Also, all vehicles must be registered in the county where the first titled owner is claiming homestead. To register a vehicle, the following is required:

  • Valid Georgia Driver's License or Georgia Identification Card
  • Title (models 1986 or newer)
  • Owner's current certificate of registration or purchase contract if registration has expired
  • Valid Georgia automobile insurance (provider will report coverage to DMV directly)
  • Current mileage on the vehicle
  • Current Georgia emissions test (will be submitted by service station electronically)
  • Original notarized power of attorney from any owner who will not be present at the time of registration
  • Date the owner of the vehicle moved to Georgia
  • If the vehicle is leased, an original notarized power of attorney from the leasing company and the complete address of the leasing company where the title is being held.

For vehicles on which there is a lien, owners must also bring the complete name and address of the lienholder. For more information, contact the Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner’s Motor Vehicles Department at 770-822-8818 or by e-mail at tag(at)gwinnettcounty.com. Please include the vehicle identification number, tag number, and the owner’s current Gwinnett County address.

Emissions Inspection Requirements:
In 2006, all 1982 to 2003 model year gasoline powered cars and light trucks must pass an emissions inspection prior to vehicle registration. Emissions inspections are required every year before the registered owner's birthday. The inspection cost is capped at $25.00. For further information, contact the Georgia Clean Air Force at 800-449-2471 or visit their web site at www.cleanairforce.com.

Ad Valorem Taxes:
Vehicle owners must renew their registration and pay ad valorem taxes each year "during the 30-day period ending on their birthday." If more than one person owns a vehicle, the birthday of the person whose name first appears on the title determines the registration period.
