Eastside Medical Center is celebrating the addition of the MAKO surgical robot to their robot family and orthopedic service line. It is the first hospital in Gwinnett County, Georgia to perform a robotic-arm assisted total knee replacement with the Mako System. The Mako robotic-arm assisted application used at Eastside Medical Center is a knee replacement treatment option designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis. This technology enables surgeons to have a more predictable surgical experience with increased accuracy.
Eastside has engaged all middle school students in Gwinnett and Walton counties to enter their “Name the Robot” art contest and received 80 plus submissions. The robot’s new name, R2-Knee2, named by a Crews Middle School student, was unveiled at the hospital’s robotics community open house and “Name the Robot” awards ceremony on October 25. Attendees at this event had the opportunity to “drive the robot” with a hands-on experience under the supervision of Eastside Medical Center’s team of orthopedic surgeons.
