Grayson

Home to about 1,314 residents, Grayson is proud and protective of its small-town atmosphere. Beginning about 1880 as James McConnell’s crossroads store and post office, then called Trip, the town incorporated in 1901 as Berkely, then again in 1902 as Grayson after the postal service notified the town that another community was incorporated as Berkely, and second choice Graymont (because of its clear view of Stone Mountain) had also been claimed elsewhere in the state. Mrs. John Jacobs, the postmaster’s wife, suggested the name Grayson after Grayson, Texas, where she had relatives. Grayson grew as an important railroad link, serving the L&L Railroad from 1898 until 1932.
