In the past, Gwinnett County has mailed out property tax bills on August 15, with two installment due dates of October 15 and November 15. In 2007, the Tax Commissioner anticipates a change in this deadline. More specifically, tax bills may be mailed as early as July 15 with new installment dates of September 15 and November 15.
A homestead exemption grants homeowners an exemption from certain property taxes. A homestead exemption, as well as the value offset exemption, is available to property owners who occupy their home as their primary residence. As of June 1, 2005, new homeowners may apply for the 2007 homestead exemption anytime between March 2, 2006 and March 1, 2007.
New homeowners should receive a homestead application in the year following their purchase. To apply for a homestead exemption, complete an application and either mail it back to the Tax Commissioner's Office by certified mail, or go to the office in person on or before the due date. Certified mail is recommended for your benefit in case your application is not received. If you do not receive an application by February 1, 2007, please request one from the Tax Commissioner's Office at 770-822-8800 or send a written request via email at Propertytax@gwinnettcounty.com or through mail to the Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner's Office, P.O. Box 372, Lawrenceville, GA 30046.
Additional exemptions are available to those age 62 or older and those who are 100% disabled. To qualify for these exemptions, you will be required to present the previous year's federal and state income tax returns in order to determine income eligibility. If you are applying for the Disabled Veteran's exemption, a letter from the Veteran's Administration confirming your disability as 100% service-connected will be required. Other disability exemptions will require certification from your attending physician.
If your property is rented or you do not reside there, you are not eligible for any exemption. Once you receive this exemption, you do not have to reapply each year unless there has been an ownership change by means of a legal instrument. If you miss the deadline of March 1, you may apply for the savings on the following year.
