2014 Pinnacle Awards Recognizes Leaders in Growth, Innovation and Community
In an effort to recognize Gwinnett’s small businesses and entrepreneurs as pivotal to America’s economic growth and stability, the Gwinnett Chamber and Presenting Sponsor The Atlanta Journal-Constitution hosted the 2014 Pinnacle Awards on April 25. The event, themed by growth, success, and community engagement, named the Overall Small Business Person of the Year and honored dozens of successful small businesses and entrepreneurs for extraordinary achievement.
Matt Hyatt of Rocket IT received the 2014 Overall Gwinnett Small Business Person of the Year Award and was also the winner of Gwinnett’s Small Business of the Year for the 10-99 employee category. Additional Small Business of the Year Awards were presented to John Lehmberg with Make It Loud for the 1-9 employee category and Lyn Wright with Plumbing Distributors, Inc. for the 100+ employee category. Twenty-two additional small businesses were awarded Pinnacle Awards and named among the prestigious “Pinnacle Top 25” for demonstrating unprecedented growth and contribution to the community.
“These risk-takers and innovators are the ones who create jobs and provide much-needed services for our community, creating a better quality of life for everyone,” said Carla Carraway, President of Precision Planning, Inc. and 2014 Gwinnett Chamber Board Chair. “These are the leaders who are laying the foundation for a bright future of opportunity. In addition, Gwinnett’s top non-profit organizations, whose generous and inspiring efforts can be seen and felt throughout Gwinnett, were also recognized at the awards luncheon. The following organizations are the winners of the 2014 Pinnacle Nonprofit Awards: Northeast Georgia Council – Boy Scouts of America, Single Parent Alliance & Resource Center, and the 2014 Overall Nonprofit winner, Creative Enterprises, Inc.
Partnership Gwinnett and Gwinnett Chamber Economic Development joined with The University of Georgia Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Jackson Electric Membership Corporation, and The Myers Group to announce the finalists and winner of the fourth annual small business plan competition – The Amazing Entrepreneur – at the Pinnacle Awards. Black Mermaid Handcrafted Soaps & Products was named the Grand Prize recipient of the contest’s Established Business category.

Founded in 2004 by John Lehmberg in the basement of his home, Make It Loud was created specifically to meet the web presence and marketing needs of small- and medium-sized businesses. Growth contributed to on the hiring of employees who serve Make It Loud’s clients with care and attention. As design changed and website marketing became imperative, Make It Loud also began providing search engine optimization services. With the advent of social media, Make It Loud serves that segment as well and offers complimentary training at their new storefront in Buford, enabling them to be more available and allowing them to keep relationship and solid e-marketing strategies at the forefront of their business, which is the heart of their DNA.
Plumbing Distributors, Inc. – Small Business of the Year (100+ employee category)
In 1973, Gladston Mealor opened Plumbing Distributors, Inc. in Gwinnett County. Along with his son Sid, Glad built a business which includes wholesale distribution of commercial and residential plumbing and lighting supplies, serving contractors and homeowners. PDI’s largest location and headquarters remains in Lawrenceville, but their business has expanded to include Nashville, Tennessee where a new showroom is opening soon. PDI’s core values – accountability, commitment, flexibility, integrity, loyalty, and teamwork – remain intact and have been the backbone of their success for more than 40 years. Following the passing of Glad and Sid, PDI has stayed on course with Glad’s daughter, Lyn Wright, serving as Chairman of the Board.

An adult day support center and job training facility, the mission of Creative Enterprises, Inc. is to assist persons with disabilities and others with barriers to employment in maximizing their potential. Northeast Georgia Council – Boy Scouts of America
The Northeast Georgia Council was chartered by the Boy Scouts of America in 1935 to provide programs in twenty-six counties. After years of phenomenal growth in the northeast Georgia area, the council now serves more than 32,000 Scouts and Scout leaders. Three camping facilities including Camp Rainey, Camp Rotary, and Scoutland, and two service centers in Jefferson and Lawrenceville are provided for support.
